So, I just read a profoundly disturbing story on Yahoo! that seems pretty harmless on the surface. It seems that a bunch of researchers have determined that voting behavior is at least 50% determined by genetics. They studied twins raised in different housholds, and determined that their shared genetics were responsible for their politics…
Wow. Is anyone else really horrified by the ramifications of that? The idea that people are genetically predetermined to vote or not to vote, to prefer democracy over theocracy, to be a liberal or a conservative?
This reminds me of Social Darwinism in the extreme. What could be extrapolated from this study is that groups of people are genetically predetermined to a particular political system. Russia has been historically run by demagogic dictators…maybe they’re just genetically disposed to that. Maybe America, oh, wait, “Merca” (said with Dubya accent) is genetically a bastian of democracy and freedom. We are just chosen by evolution to be the leaders of the free world…
Ok, maybe I am overracting, but I do find the study pretty creepy. Check it out.
